A tribute to the life of Ken Williams – MAABC Member and Vice President

By |2019-07-22T13:36:34+00:00May 8th, 2018|Captain's Blog|

On Saturday 14th April MAABC lost one of its most valued and popular members when Ken Williams died just before his 80th birthday. Ken became part of MAABC when it moved to the current boathouse 20 years ago. At the time Ken was a member of Horseferry Rowing Club, the previous owners, and the sale allowed Horseferry members to use the facilities alongside MAABC. However, after a short period Ken became a full member of MAABC. Ken took up rowing about 60 years ago when he joined Horseferry Rowing Club, a club he remained with for the next 40 years [...]

MAABC Success at the Indoor Rowing Championships

By |2019-07-22T13:36:34+00:00December 13th, 2017|Captain's Blog, Racing, Senior women|

Captain Nicola Dale writes that two members of MAABC won at the British Indoor Rowing Championships last Saturday with a third member also doing particularly well! Kaila Engelsman won the Open Women's event in a cracking time of 7:01.6 even writing this makes me feel exhausted.  We are incredibly proud of this and perhaps we should consider naming one of the new ergos after Kaila.  There is an excellent article on Kaila's success and her ambitions on the WeRow Life website. Additionally Jennifer Aitken came in 4th which was a superb effort with a time 7:19.1  - and thirdly Natalie [...]

“People can achieve so much more by having the confidence to work just a little bit harder” Geoffrey Potts Geoffrey Potts knew that life was about margins and sacrifice. In 1974 Geoffrey raced in the lightweight single sculls at the World Championships in Lucerne. He came 4th by a margin of a foot and had the photo finish as a reminder. Most of us would be satisfied to be the 4th best in the world in any sport but Geoffrey told us he knew he could have trained harder, pushed harder and prepared better. He used this as a reminder [...]

MAABC on Gloriana

By |2019-07-22T13:36:34+00:00September 28th, 2017|Masters Men, Masters women, Social|

On Sunday 24th September the sun shone for MAABC’s outing on the Queen’s Rowbarge Gloriana, created to mark her Diamond Jubilee. Some 19 rowers and a dozen passengers assembled as per organiser Peter Robert’s instructions on the dot of 10am (well give or take 25 minutes), all successfully clad in MAA kit (though of varying era and number of layers). We were briefed on how to row her - fixed seat, square blade paddling, no buttons or gates, long strokes – and the need to be able to “toss the blades”, then we went aboard. There was much interest in [...]
