Ralph Howard, our oldest Vice President, was born in Berlin on 22 April 1918, where he first started rowing. With the rise of Hitler and the Nazi regime, non-Germans were being told to leave Germany. In Germany, you took the nationality of your father. Ralph’s father was Czech and his mother Polish - so no choice but to leave where he was born, leave his mother in Berlin and go to his father’s birthplace in Czechoslovakia. Rob Carpenter and Paul Blanchard cooked an excellent Christmas lunch that was enjoyed by 60 club members on Saturday 15th December.
Last weekend some of the racing men’s Masters, Andy Napier, Peter Harvey, Colin Cracknell & Peter Hoile, along with the supporters club, wives & daughters, took up a very long outstanding invitation from one of our former members (when we were across the river), Jochen Kleinertz of the Akademischer Ruderclub Würzburg, (ARCW) Germany. We entered a MMH4x- in the Bocksbeutelregatta which is on the Main River every October. This is a head race for all classes of boats, from juniors to Masters. MAABC is starting a development programme under the direction of Director of Rowing, Valentin Piticariu. Following a successful year for the Women’s Squad, we are looking to build on this and also develop a Men’s Squad after nearly 10 years without one. MAABC crews, some young and others a bit older, raced at Molesey Regatta on 21st July with some success. It was an extremely hot day that was a challenge to all who took part. Our men's masters won F/G/H quads beating Thames in the first race and Kingston in the final. In both races the MAABC Masters H crew dominated and won comfortably. The crew consisted of Peter Hoile, Colin Cracknell, Keith Mahony and Andy Napier.
