International Representation
MAABC has helped a significant number of athletes achieve their dreams of international selection in recent years. We are very proud of all of them!
World Championships
MAABC has had four members represent Great Britain at World Championships, all coached by MAABC coaches:
George Menheneott – W4- 2007 – 4th place (also Silver at Ottensheim World Cup). Coach: Ian Roots (MAABC) & GBR.
Lorna Norris – WLwt4x, 2005 – bronze medal. Coaches: Richard Tinkler and Ian Roots (MAABC) & GBR.
James Di Luzio – M2x, World Junior Champion 1997 (with partner Matthew Wells). Coaches: Ian Roots (MAABC) & Darren Whiter (GBR).
Sue Appelboom – WLwt 1x, 1991, 1995, 1996. Coach: Tony James (MAABC).
Commonwealth Rowing Championships
Since rowing was taken out of the main Commonwealth Games programme, a separate Commonwealth Rowing Championships has been held every 4 years. MAABC athletes have been chosen to represent England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland:
Anna Townsend and Ruth Sander represented England in 2010 – Gold medals in WLwt 2-, Silver medals in W4x, and Bronze medals in WLwt2x. Ruth also won a Silver medal in WLwt 1x. (The Commonwealth Regatta was run under a new format in 2010, with just 4 female athletes per country, 2 lightweight and 2 heavyweight).
Beks Edgar and Lorna Brown represented Wales in 2010.
Mel Sage represented England in 2006 – Gold medals in WLwt 2x and WLwt 4x.
George Menheneott represented England in 2006 – Gold medal in W2x.
Lu Bowden, Tracey Matthews, Eva Bishop and Tash Smith represented England in 2006 – Gold medal in W4x
Ingrid Hansen represented Scotland in 2006 – Silver medal in Lwt 4x.
Beks Edgar represented Wales in 2006 – Bronze medal in Lwt 4x.
Pippa Wilson represented England in 2002 – silver medals in W2x (with Charlotte Dalton from Thames RC) and W4x (with Charlotte, Jen Smith from Warwick and Jane Fisher from Worcester).
Home International Regatta
Members of the MAABC Senior Women’s squad have been regularly involved in the Home International Regatta. In 2013 we had athletes in the England and Wales squads:
Anna Townsend (England, 2x)
Fran Rawlins (England, 2x)
Starz Watterston (England, 2-)
Beks Edgar (Wales, 2-, 4- and 8+)
Dani Charles (Wales, 2x)
In July 2023 Jen Bailey and Katy Brooks represented England in the Home International, with James Robson as coach. England’s crew selection policy meant they raced in and coached the 4+ and 8+ rather than the 2- they won trials in. This was first and foremost a team event and credit to Jen, Katy and James for finishing second to Scotland in both boats and helping England win the Senior Women’s event. See the report here .

The Senior Women’s squad currently has a number of members seeking selection for the GB Squad. If you have aspirations to race at the highest international level then MAABC will offer you the support and coaching you need to achieve this – please contact the captain (captain@maabc.com) to discuss further.
